Mount Torbreck Summit Walk
The Mount Torbreck Summit walk can be accessed from the Barnewall Plains Picnic Area. The track is a 4.2km return to the summit of Mount Torbreck that rises to an altitude of 1516m. The steep and rocky route is marked by orange arrows on trees that are easy to follow as you ascend up the mountain. Be careful with your footing and be prepared to weave under and over fallen trees and rocks as you navigate your way to the top.
It is highly recommended that you do this hike with a friend, wear proper hiking boots, leave early to avoid getting caught in the dark on the way down and take warm clothes as it can get quite cold at the top with pockets of snow.
The summit is marked by a rock cairn and offers breathtaking and impressive views of the ranges covered in ash forests in all directions, including nearby Lake Eildon and the higher ranges near Mt Buller!
Please Note: Mobile phone reception drops off in the Rubicon State Forest so always do your own research on any walk before heading out; walk prepared and let someone know before you go!
GETTING THERE
The walk is best accessed by taking Eildon – Jamieson Road between Eildon and Thornton. Turn right onto Barnewall Plains Road, 100 metres past the Jerusalem Creek Road junction. This road is unsealed, however suitable for 2WD and leads you all the way to the trailhead of the walk at the Barnewall Plains Picnic Area.
You will pass the intersection of Barnewall Plains Rd and Torbreck Rd and continue up the road until you reach a gate on your left. Please note: this gate is seasonally closed between the Queen’s Birthday weekend and Melbourne Cup weekend.
If the gate is closed, it is a 1500 metres walk up to the start of the trailhead but if opened you can continue up the road for 1.5km and park your car on the grass next to the trail head. You will know you have arrived when you reach an open saddle, see the orange trailhead signage on your left and picnic tables to your right.
